Bringing Miami Vice into the 21st Century

On June 10, 2011, in DSLR BLOG, by J.M.L.

I would like to share a quick video inspired by a scene from the pilot episode of Miami Vice 1984. The piece I have posted was filmed and edited in about one day with minimal equipment. The video below is no Miami Vice but I wanted to reiterate how far technology has come, simplifying the production process and making filmmaking on a professional level available to anyone with the motivation and drive!

Below I have prepared the shots from the original scene shot in 1984 in conjunction with the shots we here have filmed in 2011.

The goal was not to make a carbon copy of the original but just to recreate the overall  feel, look, and pace. From the few shots I decide decide to somewhat duplicate, you can see the similarities achieved with todays DSLRs. The rig of choice for this recreation was simple: one Canon 7D and two 5Dmkii cameras, rotating between one 6″ Car Mount Suction Cup, and two tripods. Below is a photo behind the scenes of Miami Vice back in the ’80′s. You can see the extensive rig used to house and mount the cameras for the vehicle shots compared to the next two photos which was the essence of our rig.

..more to this post coming soon..
