Sony Xperia Photography Tutorial – Part 1: Camera Controls

PART 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcjIw65uFMs

Anyway, here’s part 1 of the photography tutorial for Sony smartphones. If this doesn’t satisfy your smartphone photography needs, you’ll be happy to hear that I’ll record more (and more professional) tutorial videos soon: part 2 and part 3 covering post-processing of images and composition techniques (something that is very general of photography anyway – go check some other tutorials on that).

Herman, i have noticed that taking photos in 20Mp actually generate some noisy images, itlooks like there are grains all over the image. How to fix that? I heard people saying it´s better shoot in 8Mp, but that sucks, because i have a 20.7 mp camera on my cell phone and i can´t use it because Sony pos processing does that! I don´t like the superior auto. What do you recommend?

  6. Danilo Felicio Ribeiro

Thank you, Herman! I just got a Z3 Compact and my first tought was "how to shot with all these options on the camera" Now i can enjoy all these tips :)

  8. hiii i just wanted to ask that in z1 in manual mode if i take photos in 8mega pixels does the oversampling technology work here….. that is does it give a quality of 20mp????….

[TUTORIAL]  Camera Sony Xperia Z2 (Prima Parte)

  17. Hi, I would also like to thank very much for the tutorial. To be honest, I did not really tried to get most of manual mode on my Xperia Z1 Compact yet, as I was a bit frustrated with layout of useful manual settings. It would be great if Sony implements some sort of mode where we can have quick access to also ISO, focus mode and metering right from the main viewfinder screen. This tutorial is great for encouraging people to use manual settings more. Sadly, I too often was discouraged and chose to shoot with Google Camera app, because results were better than Sony auto mode, but the downside was that you have only exposure compensation there.

  18. Hi Herman, Thanks so much for the tutorial. I have so much more confidence with my Xperia's camera capability now.

I have one question about image focus, one morning I wanted to take a quick picture and the phone "accidentally" took the photo out of focus. I ended up liking that photo a lot and started trying to take de-focused pictures but was never able to duplicate the same result. Do you know how to trick the camera to do so?

also I just read your blog on "multi auto focus". in your blog you mentioned "When I didn't want to focus on the closest object, I simply move my camera back and forth so the object in focus changes to the one I want to be in focus. Of course, this is done while focus is locked (with the hardware button it's the easiest)." Can you elaborate a bit on "moving camera back and forth" please? :)

once again, thank you very much!

  19. Herman, what is actually changed by EV compensation? ISO, time?
I noticed that in dark room (flash disabled) when I fix ISO to 50 then EV compensation does not work at all. I put the slider up or down and it does not make the image brighter or darker. If I fix ISO to 100 than I can compensate only down (darker). Can you explain this?
    (I use xperia z3)
